According to the elders, there were several criteria that were considered before someone was promoted to be the leader or spokesperson of the community.

The pillars were three; first, the person must be rich, famous and brave.

The debate has arisen following ongoing efforts in the Mt Kenya region about who should be the political leader and official spokesperson for the region.

For some people, Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is the most suitable, saying that he has three main qualities that a person needed to have to be crowned as the leader of the Agikuyu community.

According to Mzee Njui Wanjui, Mr Kenyatta is a rich man, considering that he comes from a few families in the country who are supposed to control the economy of this nation.

“Uhuru’s father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, laid a good economic, commercial and income foundation for his family. He understood that as a leader, people look to their leader to solve the challenges they face when they find themselves in a life crisis. Therefore, it is not good for a leader to be in a situation where he cannot help his people when they are faced with challenges,” said Elder Njui.

He says that this is what has made Mr Kenyatta in a good position to fight for or continue to hold the position of chief spokesperson for Mt Kenya region, as “even efforts to convince people to support him need money”.
“It is clear that an empty hand is not blamed. Among the Kikuyu, it was the duty of the king to slaughter and feed his guests. That is what gave him acceptance and wisdom among them. Not once have we seen Mr Kenyatta doing that, for example through different Jubilee Party meetings,” he said.

Historian Wilson Nderitu, also says Mr Kenyatta has demonstrated his reputation as a hero.

He says that his bravery was evident when he was charged with crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC), in The Hague, Netherlands.

“Those were very difficult times for Mr Kenyatta as the President of Kenya and the political leader of this community. If he was not a brave person, then he would not have run for president in 2013 due to the criticism he was getting from Western countries, such as America and England. However, he decided to venture into the race without fearing anything,” said the historian.
Inquisitors say that Mr Kenyatta is also a person of merit; widely known, due to the political foundation laid by Mzee Kenyatta.

Considering that he still has that ability despite his retirement as President, analysts say it is very easy for him to continue holding that position.
