The East African Community (EAC) has fully welcomed the country of Somalia as a new member.

It is an event that took place on Monday, March 4, 2024 at the Headquarters of this East African Organization, in Arusha, Tanzania.
This is after the Government of Somalia officially submitted to the EAC the documents of the agreement to have full rights in this EAC Community, in a ceremony led by the Secretary General of the EAC, Dr Peter Mathuki.

The Minister of Trade and Industry of Somalia, Hon. Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi presented the agreement to his countryman, Dr Peter Mathuki.

In an official confirmation, the Secretary General of the EAC announced that from then on the Republic of Somalia became a full member of this East African Community.
Dr Mathuki said that Somalia is now given full rights to contribute and benefit from EAC integration.

He said, “A plan will be put out on how the Republic of Somalia will implement the objectives of the EAC such as common tax, common market, common currency and agreed policies.”

Dr Mathuki also said that Somalia’s accession to the EAC will enable the country to benefit from the EAC’s infrastructure projects, including railways and electricity networks.

He said, “These projects are aimed at increasing the level of integration, strengthening transportation and promoting regional trade, which will contribute to the economic development of Somalia.”

East African Community

He went on to say that Somalia has the longest port of 3,000 kilometers in Africa, which connects Africa to the Arab continent, which will help this East African region in trade and improve the lives of its inhabitants.

Somalia was admitted to the East African Community after the Democratic Republic of the Congo was last admitted in April 2022, and this country has begun to reap the benefits of joining the Community, as it recently sent troops from some of its countries that were going to contribute to the restore peace, even though their mission is over.
