As it has been known that the 1st of December every year is the day to fight AIDS in the world, the Association of Journalists in Rwanda responsible for fighting AIDS and other epidemics (ABASIRWA) visited Kirehe District from 27-29/11/2023 in level of health services provided in that District.

In an interview with the press, Dr Jean Claude Munyemana said that in order to fight against the new infection of the virus that causes AIDS, many programs are being carried out, including campaigns to prevent the virus that causes AIDS, providing condoms and testing people to find out their status and those who have been infected. and begin to care.

Dr Jean Claude Munyemana said that “starting from the tenth month, 15,750 people were tested, but 37 were found to be newly infected”.

Kirehe District has 5,010 people infected with HIV and taking medication. The administration says that the new infection is currently prevalent in Nyamugari, Kigarama, Kigina, Kirehe and Gatore sectors all along the road from Rusumo border to Ngoma.

One may wonder why the journalists decided to visit the Kirehe District and wonder why it was found to have many people infected with the virus that causes AIDS, but that is not the reason, the Executive Secretary of ABASIRWA Mr. Innocent Bahati told the journalists that Kirehe is a District that borders Tanzania and therefore because of the with the flow of people there may be people bringing new infections so the media as the eye of the public will do advocacy in case of a problem.

Uwedaye Gaudence, who is the head of prostitution in the three sectors of Kigina, Kirehe and Gatore, says that there are 255 people registered in this sector.

He said they were given a doctor to monitor their daily health and provide them with contraceptives.

The Deputy Mayor of Kirehe District in charge of social welfare, Mukandayisenga Janvière, speaking to reporters when asked if the number of sick people is increasing or decreasing, he said, “The number is not decreasing but increasing because people are being tested, including those who are infected, so the number is increasing because it is not possible to decrease “.
