M23 confirmed the shooting of two of its commanders

The M23 group, through its spokesperson, issued a statement confirming the death of two of its commanders who were killed in the attack.

On Tuesday, January 16, 2024, M23 was attacked by the Congolese government forces, FARDC, in areas it normally controls.

In a statement, Laurence Kanyuka, who speaks for this political group, accuses the government of Kinshasa of violating the peace agreement reached with the participation of “international partners”.

His statement did not mention the names of the M23 military commanders killed in the attacks, saying that because of this “for now, M23 has heard the message given by the Kinshasa government and will respond accordingly”.

On Tuesday, there were reports of drone attacks and bombs being fired at M23 checkpoints in Kitchanga.

The Ugandan Chimpreports newspaper says it has information that Colonel Elise Mberabagabo, popularly known as ‘Castro’, who was one of the M23 intelligence officers, was among those killed in the attacks on Tuesday.

M23 continues to accuse the government of Kinshasa of intent on war and rejecting peaceful ways to resolve the conflict.

The President of DR Congo Felix Tshisekedi said that they will never talk to the M23 group, which he considers to be terrorist and supported by Rwanda, which this country and this group deny from behind.

The forces of the Southern African Community of States (SADC), of which Congo is a member, have arrived in this country to help fight against M23.
