A major gas explosion in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, has killed at least three people and injured around 300, A government spokesman said a truck carrying gas exploded in the Embakasi district at around 11:30 p.m. (20:30 GMT), “causing a huge fire.”
Homes, businesses and cars nearby were damaged, with footage released showing flames burning near the floors, The area has been cordoned off and the cause of the explosion is under investigation. The BBC says it understands at least one person has been arrested over the incident.
The government initially said the explosion occurred at a gas plant where workers were bottling gas, but later clarified that a truck exploded in its parking lot. The fire broke out after Yahoo was reportedly suspended, The police chief in Embakasi, Wesley Kimeto, announced that the child was among the dead, adding that the death toll could rise. Officials say about 271 people were taken to hospital, including at least children
The Mayor of Nairobi District, Sakaja Johnson, announced that most of these people were treated and sent home, but at least 39 were sent to other institutions with serious injuries.
