On this Thursday afternoon, three girls at school were struck by lightning and were taken to the doctor.
On Thursday the 25th of January 2024, three girls were struck by lightning while they were playing at a school in Rusasa Sector, Gakenke District in the North Province.

According to sources, it was 1:30 p.m. when the children had already eaten and were preparing to go back to school. The rain started to fall and the thunder struck the three children and it is said that one of them was cut on the shoulders.

After the children were brought to the Nyundo Health Center, they were followed by doctors, and now they have all returned home, according to the Northern Province Police Spokesperson, SP Jean Bosco Mwiseneza told Kigali Today thanks to this story.

He said, “As soon as the lightning struck, those students who fell unconscious were taken to the doctor, now they are all back home and are fine”.

SP Mwiseneza continued to ask the teachers to protect the children when the rain is about to fall. He said: “What we are asking the administrators of the educational institutions is that they look for thunderstorms, and also know that if it starts to rain, they should protect the students from going outside, and stay in the schools.”

He added: “The lightning struck them while they were outside playing, so the first thing is to look for lightning, and the second is that the parents should understand that these are their children and they should protect them from anything that could threaten their safety.

If it rains, children should go to school, avoid plugging things that may cause accidents, educators are responsible for protecting children from accidents”.
