The management of the MTN Rwanda Telecommunication Company has announced that it is continuing preparations to build infrastructure that will help in the use of the 5G high-speed Internet network in Rwanda, including the renovation of 86 existing towers to be able to provide it.

In October 2023, Rwanda conducted the first test aimed at providing 5G internet from telecommunication equipment placed in the air, The test showed that the service operated by Japan’s Softbank provided 5G internet for at least 73 days in the air.

When MTN Rwanda revealed how the year 2023 went, he explained that the number of people using 4G internet has been increasing since July 2023 when they started providing it.

MTN shows that the number of people using 4G internet has increased, which is a sign that 5G will also be used in large numbers when it starts working in Rwanda.

The CEO of MTN Rwanda, Mapula Bodibe, stated that last year at the World Congress Summit, this company demonstrated the ability to use 5G internet in Rwanda.

He said, “In 2023, we took an interesting step in the 25 years we have been in Rwanda, to launch our 4G internet and to show at the World Congress Summit how 5G will work.”

He said, “In 2023, we took an interesting step in the 25 years we have been in Rwanda, to launch our 4G internet and to show at the World Congress Summit how 5G will work.” He went on to say that the investment MTN Rwanda continues to make will help it bring 5G internet to everyone when it starts working in Rwanda.

“Our continued investments in infrastructure will help us prepare for 5G internet and other future technologies, which will help us provide faster internet and better services,” he said,

MTN Rwanda’s Technology Officer, Gakwerere Eugene, told the Media that in order to start providing 5G internet in Rwanda, about 86 towers need to be updated to be able to provide that internet.

He said, “Last year we showed that we can put 5G on our towers, we did an experiment there at Kigali Heights where there is a tower, another one is at Intare Arena but it is not the only one. The towers we have today are capable of providing 5G Internet as well.”

e said that the fact that they haven’t had 4G internet for a year is one of the reasons why they can’t start high school right away and the investment they made in the first place has not been returned.

He said, “These plans we have to renew, but as you know, we got 4G in the month of July last year, it doesn’t last a year. At that time, it is to see what we have invested to make it available, that’s when we will launch 5G.”

Gakwerere said that the Regulatory Authority, RURA, has asked them that at least this year they will build at least 20 of the 86 towers that are needed, and he said that they also have this as their goal.
